Technology and the Productive Workforce
Think about how much has changed. No longer do employers have time clocks, water coolers, mandatory 9-5 hours at the office in suits and dresses. Along with eliminating a stressed and distracted workforce, employers are seeing more productive and creative employees by allowing work from home.
According to a recent Forbes article “2020 is predicted to be “the year of remote.”.
Just this week, Google and Microsoft have said they will grant access to their more robust teleconferencing and collaboration tools that are typically only available to enterprise customers to make it easier for people to work from home. Both companies are only offering free access for a limited time.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in October 2019, more than 26 million Americans—about 16% of the total workforce—now work remotely at least part of the time. Between 2005 and 2015, the number of U.S. employees who telecommuted increased by 115%. Many workers view telecommuting as a job perk, with more than half seeking the arrangement as a way to improve work-life balance.
Some studies have also found that teleworkers from sales, marketing, accounting, engineering and other departments whose jobs were highly complex but did not require significant collaboration or social support performed better when telecommuting than when working in the company’s office.
With more workers using modern technology to telecommute comes an added benefit for that worker who also has personal bills to pay and other consumer matters to address is that worker can utilize the same forms of technology to manage financial and personal matters with the ease of a click on their cell phone or laptop to switch focus from work to personal matters using the same cell phone they were just using for a call or a video chat.
Happy workers, happy consumers, all great results of the modern world.
